Why We Host Queer Events

Here are two women from one of our queer singles events

When We Met IRL first launched over three years ago, our mission was simple: to create fun, meaningful, and effective dating experiences that bring people together in real life. A year into our journey, we realized there was a clear demand for dedicated queer dating events, and we made it a priority to create space for LGBTQ+ singles to connect authentically. Now, two years later, our queer dating events have become an integral part of what we do—yet we’re still learning, growing, and finding ways to better serve our community.

Meeting the Needs of Our Community

From the start, our queer events have primarily attracted queer women and non-binary folks, which makes sense given our overall audience demographics. While we haven’t yet hosted events specifically for queer men, it’s something we’re exploring as we continue to expand. We’re always listening to our community, and as we grow, we hope to create even more spaces where queer people across the spectrum can find genuine connections.

I want to acknowledge that I am not queer myself, but I saw a real need for intentional, inclusive dating events that center LGBTQ+ experiences. That’s why I’ve made it a priority to ensure our queer events are led by those with lived experience. My team for these events consists entirely of queer-identifying Black women who bring their perspectives, insights, and passion to making these spaces truly affirming and welcoming.

The Challenge of Finding the Right Space

Even as an established brand with a strong following, securing the right venue for our queer dating events has been one of our biggest challenges. We’re looking for spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and inclusive—places where attendees feel safe and comfortable being themselves. But there’s more to it than just the atmosphere. We also need venues that offer reasonably priced drinks, because let’s be honest—dating is nerve-wracking enough without overpriced cocktails adding to the pressure! Balancing all of these factors while ensuring our events remain financially accessible has been a constant puzzle, but we’re committed to making it work.

Success Stories That Keep Us Going

Despite the challenges, the success stories we’ve heard from our queer events make every struggle worthwhile. We’ve had attendees tell us they met their partner at one of our mixers, formed deep friendships, or finally felt seen and valued in a dating space. One person even shared that our event was the first time they felt truly comfortable flirting with someone in public. That kind of impact is why we do this.

Looking Ahead

The future of queer dating at We Met IRL is bright. We’re committed to hosting even more events, expanding into new spaces, and continuing to foster a community where love and connection can flourish. As we navigate the challenges, we remain excited and hopeful because we know how much these spaces matter.

To everyone who has attended, supported, or shared their story with us—thank you. You’re the reason we do what we do, and we can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds.
